Get this. True story.
Years ago, I had the privilege of serving a community in a role similar to this one in Abilene.
It was a golfing community, home to a multi-national tire company’s world headquarters, whose spokesman at the time was Arnold Palmer. The co-founder of the LPGA, my friend Peg Kirk Bell, also hailed from this community and each year she held her Pro-Am there.
Needless to say, a lot of work was done on that area’s golf courses.
One year in my annual performance review, my board chair at the time dinged my performance for “not playing enough golf.” You read that right.
Determined to improve my performance and show progress, I worked hard the coming year to ensure that same criticism wouldn’t resurface. And I was wildly successful. In fact, I was so successful that in that year’s performance year I was again dinged. But this time for playing too much golf.
Go figure. That was fun while it lasted.
The point is, not many of us play enough golf. Every once in a while, I’ll get to play in the D player position in a scramble, but overall, I’ve just not had the time. And the heat certainly hasn’t compelled me to go chasing a golf ball.
Can anyone relate?
But even if you’re a course regular, here’s the good news. We have the perfect reason at the perfect time to get you on the golf course.
I want to thank Ryan Holmes (Taylor Electric Cooperative) and Katie Alford (Community Foundation of Abilene) for leading the planning effort behind this year’s Busted Putter Classic Golf Tournament. They, and their golf committee have done a spectacular job of planning an unforgettable day at the Abilene Country Club, home to this year’s tournament. We’ll be on the North Course on Treadaway.
Now, before you click out of this article, let me tell you that’s okay to be a golf hack like me or a seasoned scratch player. No matter who you are, you’ll have a blast. It’s great fun, and an important effort by the Chamber’s longstanding Military Affairs Committee (MAC).
Afterall, where else can your team of three be paired up to play with a true American patriot – one of our very own Dyess Airman?
This year’s event is scheduled for Monday, October 24 with a shotgun start at 9:30 am. Prizes will be plentiful, on-course games will be in place, and your registration includes all the goodies you’ve come to expect from a top-notch golf experience.
But I’ll do you one better. The tournament’s late October date will most certainly have great weather, although we won’t stop hoping for rain.
The cost per team is $750, and each team consists of three players of your choice and one airman that will be assigned.
Not only are you sure to have a great time and get to know a great service member, but it’s also an excellent time to showcase your company.
