We Knew Abilene Hotels Were Busy. But This Is Wild.

If you live in Abilene, none of this is going to come as a shock.

Hotel rooms are in high demand. Rates are high. The data center boom has brought thousands of workers and contractors to town, and our hotels have been feeling the impact for quite some time.

We know. You know.

But have you seen the numbers?

Source Strategies recently released its Q2 2026 Hotel Brand Report, and even knowing what we know about Abilene’s current lodging economy, the results are remarkable.

During the second quarter, Abilene had the highest hotel occupancy, highest average daily rate and highest RevPAR (revenue per available room) of ALL Texas cities.

Yes, that includes Austin. Dallas. Fort Worth. Houston. San Antonio.

Little ol’ Abilene.

Let’s look at the scoreboard

Abilene hotels finished Q2 with 74.2% occupancy, the highest among Texas metros. The statewide average was 61%.

Our average daily rate climbed to $182, surpassing Austin for the highest in Texas. Among the historical quarterly data we were able to verify, Abilene’s ADR ranks as the fifth highest ever recorded in Texas, joining a top 10 dominated by Austin–Round Rock, which holds eight spots, with Midland–Odessa rounding out the list at number 10.

Put those two together and Abilene recorded RevPAR of $135.07, compared with a statewide average of just $86.34.

And then there’s hotel revenue.

Abilene hotel revenue increased 51.2% compared with Q2 last year. That was the strongest growth among the Texas metros and far ahead of the statewide increase of 6.6%.

That’s not a typo. 51.2% !

It’s not just the citywide numbers

Some individual Abilene hotels are putting up numbers that would have been difficult to imagine just a few years ago.

Nine Abilene hotels ranked among the Top 100 hotels in Texas for RevPAR in the Source Strategies report. A few were generating RevPAR north of $250, competing alongside hotels in some of the biggest and traditionally strongest lodging markets in the state.

Again: WILD.

Of course, there’s another side to the story

Anyone who has tried to book a hotel room for a tournament, convention, family visit or weekend in Abilene lately knows it.

Success has created some challenges.

Interestingly, Abilene’s occupancy dipped slightly from 75.1% in Q2 2025 to 74.2% this year, while hotel revenue jumped more than 51%. That tells us what we’ve all been seeing: room rates are driving a significant portion of this growth.

For the Abilene Convention & Visitors Bureau, that creates an unusual balancing act. We want our hotel partners to succeed, and this level of performance is unquestionably good for Abilene’s economy. At the same time, we have longtime conventions, tournaments and events that suddenly find themselves competing for rooms in one of the hottest hotel markets in Texas.

That’s a unique problem to have.

So, what do we do with it?

The data center construction boom won’t last forever at its current intensity. That means our job at the ACVB isn’t just to celebrate today’s numbers.

It’s to capitalize on them.

This period gives Abilene an opportunity to support our tourism partners, invest in the facilities and experiences that attract visitors, protect the events that have been loyal to our community and position ourselves for what comes next.

Because eventually the hotel market will normalize.

When it does, we want all those people who discovered Abilene during this extraordinary period, and all the meetings, tournaments and events we worked hard to keep, to still have plenty of reasons to come back.

But for now, we can enjoy looking at the scoreboard for a minute.

Q2 2026 Abilene:

#1 in Texas Hotel Occupancy - 74.2%
#1 in Average Daily Rate - $182.00
#1 in RevPAR - $135.07
#1 in Hotel Revenue Increase - 51.2%

Yes, it’s a little wild, but Abilene has never been afraid of a little momentum. There’s a lot to be proud of in what’s happening here, and while growth brings challenges, that’s our job at the ACVB. We’ll handle the hard parts while Abilene enjoys the ride.
