This Wednesday, November 11, communities across our nation will come together to recognize Veterans Day, a time to honor the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the men and women who have proudly served our country. Here in Abilene, honoring those who serve is more than a tradition. It is a reflection of who we are as a community.
Abilene has long been a place where patriotism and community support go hand in hand. For more than 70 years, our relationship with Dyess Air Force Base has shaped our city's identity, strengthened our economy, and created lasting connections between our military and civilian communities. The Airmen and families who call Abilene home are not just stationed here. They are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and an important part of what makes the Big Country special.
That relationship is built on something greater than proximity. It is built on a shared commitment to service and a community that understands the importance of standing behind those who defend our freedoms. In fact, Abilene's dedication to its military community inspired the creation of the Abilene Trophy, a national recognition awarded annually to the community that demonstrates outstanding support for its local Air Force installation.
Through the Abilene Chamber's Military Affairs Council (MAC), we are proud to continue building upon that legacy. Working alongside the City of Abilene, the Development Corporation of Abilene, and nearly 300 dedicated individuals and businesses, the MAC advocates for the future of Dyess Air Force Base while supporting the Airmen and families who make its mission possible. From strengthening relationships with military leadership to championing quality-of-life initiatives, our mission is to ensure Abilene remains a community where our military members and their families feel valued and supported.
While Veterans Day provides a special opportunity to express our appreciation, the impact of military service extends far beyond a single day. Throughout our community, veterans continue to make a difference as business owners, educators, community leaders, volunteers, and neighbors. Their leadership, experience, and dedication continue to shape Abilene's future long after their military service has ended.
As we recognize Veterans Day this week, I encourage each of us to find a meaningful way to show our appreciation. Whether through a simple thank-you, a conversation with a veteran, or an act of support for a military family, even the smallest gestures can serve as powerful reminders that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
To all who have worn the uniform, and to the families who have stood beside them, thank you. Your service has helped shape our nation, and your continued contributions help make Abilene a community we are proud to call home.
